MDMA Therapy
Chemistry week 1
I read the article in class regarding the MAPS research on the use of MDMA, physiotherapy and PTSD. I have heard a bit of buzz about this experiment and the process of trials getting approved by the F.D.A. earlier in the month. I know a tiny bit about the company MAPS and I am very intrigued in their work, their approach and research. Also, I have read about other forms of therapy using psilocybin helping people with terminal illness. This work is fascinating to me and I believe can truly help many people that are in serious need. It is pretty radical and I am honestly I am a wee bit surprised the F.D.A is going forward with the trials just by the nature of the using psychotropic drugs.
The article felt very vague and wasn't very through. It raised more questions then anything. What kinds of physiotherapy were they doing? For the patients that had positive response, how long did the effects last? What is the setting that they were in while having an 8 hour therapy session on MDMA? How are the patients cared for after the sessions? What was the experience like for the patients that had a good experience? For those that didn't have a positive experience, what was it like for them? If a patient is in recovery, would they be allowed to participate in the research? Is there a spiritual component to this study?
I have many questions but keep coming back to the fact that whole body health is so very important, that includes mental health of course. Mental health seems to be compartmentalized separate from the rest of the body... which is so odd to me. Hopefully, this study or future studies similar helps integrate the aspects of the human experience. Helping people with PTSD in a sustainable way in so very needed. Some many people fall through the cracks in this society and this has to change. I am hopeful it can change. The study leaves me curious and hopeful and I will be staying tuned. If the F.D.A has approved BOTOX, I sure hope they approve more supportive therapist such as this trial.

I'm sad I missed this discussion in class! It is a really interesting topic. Thanks for sharing your thoughts- I also have a lot of questions, and I hope more research gets shared. I also started reading the article you added, thank you, super fascinating. I am very interested in any kind of natural medicine that can help people improve their health- for sure there are many psychoactive plants in pharmacies around the world that have been part of medicine for centuries, so I hope we get to learn more about their medicinal potential in the coming years! -Elokin
ReplyDeleteI am hoping this will become more of a thing, too... and I am hoping that people will start to dive deeper within to be able to present our society with some worthy guides that have cracked open and dived beyond the mechanical way of thinking about the world... *alison
